Today I decided to switch out my DSLR for using the camera on my smartphone. In a fun game of Phone vs. Camera.
Phone vs. Camera
I have an iPhone 5s. I had an accident with my iPhone 6 where the folding in half rumor actually came true. Looking up the specs on the apple website, the iPhone5s has an 8-megapixel camera. The aperture is f/2.2. There are exposure controls and auto HDR on photos. Also a grid option and the standard phone option of filters, face detection, and panoramic settings.
Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of articles and posts about phone photography with tips and tricks, and tutorials to get good pics regarding composition and positioning, and thought I’d apply my DSLR knowledge and experience to my simple phone.
My DSLR love
For a person who primarily only uses a DSLR nowadays and only uses my phone camera for the generic white-girl selfie, I am constantly surprised by the quality my phone can come up with, especially at a close distance. Due to the nature of my photography, I’m used to working with two main lenses, a wide-angle lens which has become my everyday lens to an extent, and also a zoom lens for the showing and sports I do.
Taking away the aspect of the DSLR with the fancy buttons and settings and bringing it back down to the basics of a point and shoot, gives me a lot more time to think about the actual picture I’m taking as I don’t have that anxiety of getting my settings right. What I focused on is composition, mainly with light and angles.
I did enjoy swapping out my DSLR. In the future, I think I’ll stick with using my 6D, even if it is a bit bulky.
