Military History is a huge part of my life. It wouldn’t be possible without the amazing actions taken by soldiers throughout the 20th and 21st century, and this year I would like to share with you my favourite/iconic poetry that has come out of conflict.

In Flanders Fields
2nd September 1939
BY M. JEAN PRUSSING
What we have feared
Assumes dimension and a name;
The long shadow emerges from the wall;
The smoke is a flame.
So wind we heard in elm tree branches
Is a voice after all;
So corners wake,
And stairways speak,
And the twisted stick becomes a snake.
Ditty for Departing Troops
BY EVE MERRIAM
Keep your eye fixed normally on woe:
War solves problems, ends with armistice.
When Honour is at Stake we Gladly Go.
The victor’s rose will flower on our grave, for Justice
under her bloody blindfold is wide awake we know.
